President Donald Trump has reportedly asked Apple to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps, stirring controversy in Canada amidst ongoing trade tensions. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum stated that Trump directly contacted Apple regarding the renaming. The alteration is anticipated to occur soon, with the potential for Lake America to replace Lake Ontario on Apple Maps.
Following a recent executive order by Trump, Lake Ontario is set to be officially renamed “Lake America.” This decision came shortly after trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada stalled, resulting in significant tariffs imposed by the United States, to which Canada responded with retaliatory levies.
Despite the proposed name change, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney firmly rejected the idea, affirming that Lake Ontario, situated between Ontario and New York state, will remain known as Lake Ontario “now and always.” Google Maps in the U.S. has already implemented the change to reflect the new name, while Google Maps users in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario.
Apple has not yet responded to inquiries about whether Trump requested the lake’s renaming on Apple Maps. As of the latest check, Apple Maps still identifies the body of water as Lake Ontario. In a similar move in 2025, Trump signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, impacting U.S. federal documents and geographic services. Some online mapping services and news outlets have adopted the name “Gulf of America” for the region, with Apple Maps currently displaying it as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”
