A heartwarming tale of potential adoption for two parentless siblings took a dark turn as the couple allegedly subjected the boys to cruel and inhumane treatment, a court revealed.
The harrowing account involves a 12-year-old boy, known as LL, who suffered immensely in his final hours while trying to flee a locked basement. Allegedly, the prospective adoptive parents callously watched him suffer without offering help. Tragically, LL, who was seeking care and comfort, met a dreadful fate under their care, enduring appalling living conditions and torment.
Becky Hamber and Brandy Cooney have pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and other offenses related to LL’s younger brother, JL. JL testified against the couple, detailing the neglect and abuse they endured while under their guardianship.
Accusations suggest that the couple mistreated the children, fabricating behavioral issues to service providers. However, the defense argues that they struggled to care for the brothers, who had special needs, with minimal assistance.
When LL was discovered in the basement of the couple’s Toronto residence, he was in a dire state, malnourished and unresponsive. Despite efforts to save him, LL succumbed to his conditions, resembling a much younger child due to severe malnutrition.
Reports indicate that LL, while trapped in the basement, endured physical distress and pleaded to be released. Witnesses testified to the horrific conditions he was subjected to while in the couple’s care.
During the trial, a social worker recounted the appalling living conditions LL endured, highlighting the lack of basic care and the insensitivity shown by Cooney and Hamber towards the boy’s suffering.
Details from the investigation revealed disturbing treatment, including LL being made to wear a wetsuit and subjected to degrading activities while in the couple’s custody.
The case continues to unfold, with the trial expected to extend until December as further evidence is presented.
