“Debate Rises Over Naming Criminals in Public Shaming”

Published:

Labour Minister Jake Richards has acknowledged concerns about the potential negative impact on children of publicly naming and shaming criminals involved in Community Payback schemes. This comes after over 20 justice organizations and individuals urged Justice Secretary David Lammy to reconsider the practice.

In response, Richards emphasized the importance of ensuring justice is transparent and visible to the public. The Government’s Sentencing Bill, set for discussion in Parliament, includes provisions to disclose the identities of individuals sentenced to unpaid work post-conviction.

While defending the principle of public accountability in the justice system, Richards recognized the need for careful consideration of the implications. He stressed the necessity of maintaining public trust and confidence in the justice system by demonstrating that offenders are held accountable for their actions.

The letter opposing the naming and shaming approach was signed by prominent figures in the sector, warning of potential adverse effects on thousands of children and young individuals. The debate continues on balancing accountability with safeguarding the well-being of innocent family members.
