“Murder Accused Nick Reiner Denied $1.5M Trust Fund Access”

Published:

Nick Reiner, accused of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been blocked from accessing the $1.5-million US trust fund he sought for his legal defense. As per a recent filing, Reiner had been trying to claim unpaid funds from a trust set up by his parents in 1993.

Trustees declined Reiner’s request for the funds, citing the “slayer statute” in California law, which prohibits individuals who have intentionally killed someone from inheriting their assets. Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and Michele, a photographer and producer, were fatally stabbed in their California residence on December 14, 2025, with their son, Nick Reiner, being arrested shortly after.

Nick Reiner, aged 32, faces murder charges and has entered a plea of not guilty. The indictment, unsealed by a Los Angeles County grand jury, alleges that Reiner premeditated the attack on his parents, potentially leading to a capital punishment sentence. The decision on seeking the death penalty is pending.

Reiner is set to appear in court for a pretrial hearing in September, with public defender Kimberly Greene representing him. The filing revealed that separate trust funds were established for each Reiner child, with Nick entitled to access his trust fund in portions upon turning 30 and 35, totaling at least $1.5 million US.

The legal battle over the trust fund intensified as high-profile attorney Alan Jackson, initially hired to represent Reiner, left the case abruptly. Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to cover his legal fees but later rescinded their support. Jackson expressed willingness to rejoin the case if funds became available.

Legal representatives overseeing the trust fund, Paul R. Kanin, and Jodi Pais Montgomery, concluded that the uncertain outcome of Reiner’s criminal case hinders fund distribution. The trust fund remains inaccessible until the impact of the “slayer statute” principles on Reiner’s entitlement is clarified. The motive behind the killings remains unknown to the public.

Jake Reiner, the elder son, shared his anguish over his parents’ tragic deaths and the case’s focus on his brother’s alleged involvement. The Reiner family tragedy has left a lasting impact, with the legal proceedings ongoing.
