Keir Starmer has criticized the “unacceptable” assaults on Wes Streeting following an unsuccessful attempt by No10 to counter threats to the PM’s position.
Supporters of the Prime Minister launched a preemptive strike against a potential challenge post-Budget, cautioning that Mr. Starmer would resist any efforts to remove him. However, the operation, which seemed to target the Health Secretary, ended in a significant failure.
Internal conflict erupted on Wednesday as Mr. Streeting condemned the “toxic environment” in No10, with one MP drawing comparisons between aides and characters from the television show “The Thick of It.” Mr. Starmer was compelled to publicly distance himself from the attacks in the Commons on Wednesday, throwing his support behind his Health Secretary, whom he praised for doing “an excellent job.”
“I find any attack on any member of my Cabinet completely unacceptable,” he stated, emphasizing that he had never approved briefings against his top team members. During a subsequent briefing, the PM’s political spokesperson declared, “As previously stated, any unauthorized briefings against Cabinet Ministers will be addressed.”
The spokesperson affirmed the PM’s full confidence in his chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, whom some MPs attempted to hold responsible for the briefing.
Mr. Streeting vehemently refuted allegations of plotting against the PM in a scheduled media appearance before a significant speech on the NHS. He dismissed the “self-defeating” rumors as spread by those engrossed in “Celebrity Traitors.”
“This is among the most severe attacks on a loyal individual I’ve witnessed since Joe Marler’s expulsion in the final,” he remarked. “It’s an entirely counterproductive briefing, not least because it’s false, and I fail to see how it benefits the Prime Minister in any way.”
He attributed the situation to a “toxic environment” in Downing Street and called for the dismissal of those responsible for the briefings. Mr. Streeting stated, “Labeling Labour MPs as feral is not constructive.”
The dispute arises amidst concerns among MPs as Mr. Starmer faces challenges in boosting Labour’s polling numbers against a surge from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. Additionally, it precedes a crucial Budget address by Rachel Reeves, anticipated to include substantial tax hikes that go against the party’s manifesto.
Labour MPs expressed their anger on Wednesday over the decision to fuel speculation about Mr. Starmer’s future. A Labour MP criticized the PM’s approach, stating, “The PM’s team is mishandling preparations for a challenging Budget by needlessly targeting Wes.”
Another MP expressed frustration, questioning the PM’s competence in handling internal matters compared to international issues. The MP remarked, “They may think they’re from the West Wing, but they exhibit behaviors akin to ‘The Thick of It.'”
Jo White, chair of the Labour MP Red Wall group, warned against internal bickering, emphasizing the need for unity. She criticized No10 for briefing against Wes, suggesting it was misguided. Despite the briefings, one minister dismissed the distractions, urging the party to refocus on their duties.
