Joshua Maddux, aged 18, informed his parents in May 2008 that he was taking a brief walk from their house in Woodland Park, Teller County.
When Joshua did not return home, his family raised concerns, prompting emergency services to conduct a thorough search of the surrounding area. Despite the family’s hope that he had chosen to start a new life elsewhere, the reality of his disappearance lingered, as shared by his sister Kate on the News of Woodland Park website.
During the search, Joshua’s father, Mike, explored homeless shelters and camping sites nearby in hopes of locating his son. Mike expressed his distress to Sky News, recalling the abrupt disappearance of Joshua and the lingering uncertainty around his whereabouts.
Tragically, the family’s optimism was shattered seven years later upon the discovery of Joshua’s remains in an abandoned cabin near Colorado Springs in 2015. Dental records confirmed the identity of the deceased as the missing teenager.
Addressing the media, Teller County Coroner Al Born acknowledged the existence of unanswerable queries surrounding the circumstances. It was suggested that Joshua may have become stuck while attempting to descend the chimney, situated within a mile of his home.
The incident was deemed accidental, with no signs of foul play detected. The property owner, Chuck Murphy, mentioned infrequent visits to the cabin over the past decade, noting an obstructed fireplace that had never raised suspicion.
Subsequent to construction workers moving the obstruction, Joshua’s clothing was found neatly arranged at the chimney’s base, revealing his mummified remains within. The positioning of his body indicated a head-first entry, possibly to access the locked premises.
