“Israel Accused of Starting Deadly Wildfires in Lebanon”

Published:

LISTEN | FRONT BURNER:

Over the weekend, Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals, as reported by the country’s health ministry. This incident marked the deadliest attack since a ceasefire agreement was established in June to cease hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, despite ongoing attacks.

Alongside airstrikes and drone assaults, locals and emergency responders in the area have accused Israeli military of purposefully igniting wildfires that have been devastating homes, forests, and olive groves in the conflict-ridden region.

These events have left residents concerned about their safety and the possibility of ever returning home for the hundreds of thousands displaced by the conflict.

Will Christou, a correspondent with The Guardian based in Beirut, has been covering the wildfires and the broader Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon.

Correction: A previous version of this report erroneously stated that in June 2026, a memorandum of understanding was signed by the United States, Israel, and Iran. However, Israel was not a signatory to that agreement. This error has been rectified.
