“Aldi Regains Title of UK’s Most Affordable Supermarket”

Published:

Aldi has regained its position as the most affordable supermarket in the UK, according to recent research conducted by consumer group Which?. The study compared prices for a list of 70 items across various supermarkets. On average, the total cost at Aldi was £121.22, slightly edging out Lidl, which had an average cost of £122.35. Tesco came in as the third most expensive option, but Clubcard members were able to save an average of £2.55, bringing the total cost down to £133.65.

In contrast, Waitrose emerged as the priciest option, with an average cost of £166.79 for the same set of items. Opting to shop exclusively at Aldi or Waitrose could result in savings of over £45 for a family.

Which? carries out this comparison every month, analyzing the prices of eight different supermarket chains based on a selection of groceries. The list of 70 items includes both store-brand products and well-known brand names like Birds Eye and Hovis.

In a separate comparison involving a larger list of 183 items, Asda was identified as the most economical choice, with an average cost of £455.52 last month. Asda’s commitment to reducing prices to compete with rivals, including discount stores, has been evident. Shoppers could save £9.71 by choosing Asda over Tesco for the same items and utilizing their Clubcard.

On the higher end of the spectrum, Waitrose was the most expensive for the larger shopping list, totaling £522.91, which was significantly more than Asda’s cost. In the smaller list of items, Waitrose’s average was 38% higher than Aldi, representing a difference of £45.57.

Reena Sewraz, the retail editor at Which?, highlighted the affordability of shopping at Aldi and Lidl. She emphasized that while Aldi was the cheapest for the month, Lidl also presents a cost-effective option. As Christmas approaches, price-conscious households can benefit from comparing prices across supermarkets, potentially saving up to 27% by choosing wisely.
