A former police officer from New Jersey, Rebecca Sayegh, confessed to breaking into her ex-boyfriend’s residence and assaulting him and his new partner. The incident occurred in April, prompting a response from the Berkeley Township Police Department following reports of a domestic disturbance.
Sayegh forcibly entered the house using her baton, confronting her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend. The off-duty officer, who had previously lived with her ex for five years, engaged in a heated argument with the couple, resulting in physical altercations where she pushed and shoved them.
Despite their attempts to restrain her, Sayegh managed to break free and proceeded to vandalize items in the house and damage the victim’s car. The situation escalated when the new girlfriend sought refuge in the backyard and called the police, leading to Sayegh resisting arrest and attempting to fight with responding officers.
Ultimately, law enforcement successfully restrained Sayegh, who made threatening remarks towards her ex’s property as she was being escorted away. The damages caused by the former officer amounted to approximately $2,000 for the home and $500 for the car.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office reported that Sayegh had broken the front glass door to gain entry and had also damaged the victim’s vehicle parked in the driveway. Despite her resistance during the arrest, Sayegh was eventually taken into custody and subsequently released from Ocean County Jail due to New Jersey Bail Reform.
As part of her guilty plea at the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Sayegh relinquished her position at the Toms River Township Police Department and any potential future public employment in New Jersey. She is scheduled for sentencing on January 26 of the upcoming year. Sayegh’s guilty plea came after she filed a lawsuit against the department and township, alleging sexual harassment by her superiors and discriminatory practices in promotions based on her gender.
