Kindle Users Alerted: Deadline to Lose Access to New Books in 24 Hours

Published:

Kindle users were recently alerted that their e-readers may lose access to new books soon. The deadline for this change is just 24 hours away, set to take effect on May 20, 2026. This update impacts older Kindle models like Kindle 5 and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen, restricting the addition or reading of new content.

For users concerned about the Amazon update affecting their devices, here is a list of models that will be barred from the book store this week:

Affected Devices:
– Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
– Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)
– Kindle Keyboard (2010)
– Kindle 4 (2011)
– Kindle Touch (2011)
– Kindle 5 (2012)
– Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012)

Existing book libraries on these devices will remain accessible, but after the deadline, the affected Kindles will operate as “read-only” devices.

Amazon stated, “Starting May 20, 2026, users with Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 or earlier will no longer be able to buy, borrow, or download new content from the Kindle Store.” The company emphasized that while these models have been supported for up to 18 years, technological advancements have rendered them obsolete.

Although disappointing for owners of these older Kindles, Amazon is alleviating the impact by offering discounts on new devices. Affected customers are being informed and offered a 20% discount on selected new Kindle models, along with a £15 eBook credit.

There is a variety of new Kindle options available, including standard models and Colorsoft devices with color screens. Those interested in more than just book access can explore the Scribe range, which includes a digital pen for note-taking, document annotation, and book markup.
