“Trump Teases Revival of Keystone XL Pipeline Amid Trade Talks”

Published:

U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at the revival of the Keystone XL oil pipeline project, which was previously abandoned by past administrations, suggesting that it could be resurrected under a new trade deal with Canada. However, industry experts caution that this move may be more about political strategy than actual energy interests.

Trump made the announcement on social media just hours before imposing new tariffs on Canadian goods, revealing a temporary halt on tariffs as part of a new agreement with Canada. Referring to his predecessor, Trump mentioned that the Keystone XL Pipeline, which was halted by Joe Biden, might be resurrected.

While some experts view Trump’s statement as a potential bargaining chip in ongoing trade negotiations, others believe that reviving the controversial pipeline project could face significant challenges, both politically and environmentally. The project, if pursued, would need to navigate existing hurdles and uncertainties in the current market and political landscape.

The Keystone XL project, proposed in 2008 by TransCanada and ConocoPhillips, faced years of opposition before being effectively abandoned. Trump, upon taking office in 2025, reversed previous administrations’ decisions and expressed support for reviving parts of the project. Prime Minister Mark Carney has shown interest in advancing the Keystone XL initiative, although challenges remain in its potential resurrection.

South Bow Corporation, the current operator of the Keystone Pipeline System, has been exploring new projects like the Prairie Connector, which could significantly boost Canada’s crude oil exports to the U.S. Despite potential benefits, final decisions on these projects are pending, awaiting market conditions and regulatory approvals.

In the midst of shifting global oil trade dynamics, South Bow remains optimistic about the long-term demand for Canadian crude in the U.S. market. The company’s efforts to secure commitments from customers reflect confidence in the project’s viability, but uncertainties persist regarding its ultimate implementation.
