Police reported that two individuals sustained injuries at the Nanaksar Gurdwara temple in Edmonton after a man armed with a screwdriver disrupted morning prayers. The incident occurred at around 5 a.m. on the outskirts of the city, leading to the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect. The motive behind the stabbing remains undisclosed, with the Hate Crimes unit of the Edmonton Police Service conducting an investigation.
According to Acting Inspector Eric Stewart, the suspect attempted to enter the prayer room at the temple before stabbing two men, aged 75 and 51. Prompt action by witnesses prevented further harm, and the victims, along with the suspect, received medical treatment for non-life threatening injuries. The suspect, with a history of violence, faces pending charges and had recently been released from a federal institution.
Zora Grewal, vice president of the temple, mentioned that the victims were a temple priest and a volunteer. Despite initial concerns, the Sikh scripture was unharmed during the attack. Grewal expressed shock at the suspect’s recent release and emphasized the need for stricter controls on dangerous offenders’ releases. Both victims are expected to recover, and security measures may be reviewed for enhanced safety.
Additionally, the World Sikh Organization of Canada urged vigilance within the Sikh community following the incident, emphasizing the need to strengthen security protocols. The gurdwara was temporarily closed as investigations continue, coinciding with recent threatening calls received by two other Sikh temples in Alberta. Political figures, including Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney, condemned the violence and offered support to the affected community members. Alberta’s opposition leader, Naheed Nenshi, expressed concern over the incident and reassured support for the impacted individuals.
