Preston Manning is taking a leading role in addressing Western Canada’s historical issues with the federal government, in anticipation of Alberta’s upcoming fall referendum. Manning, the former Reform Party leader, will co-chair virtual sessions on September 19 and 20 alongside former B.C. premier Gordon Campbell.
The forum coincides with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s plan to present 10 referendum questions to voters on October 19, which includes the option of a second binding referendum on separation. Manning emphasized that the purpose of these events is to educate voters and encourage participation, steering clear of the usual partisan debates often seen in public meetings.
Unlike previous advisory panels like the Alberta Next panel and the Fair Deal panel, Manning highlighted that this initiative aims for a broader and less partisan approach. The focus is not on promoting one perspective but on presenting various options through a democratic process.
Furthermore, the forum’s scope extends beyond Alberta, with plans for a follow-up session in October and the development of recommendations post the referendum. These recommendations will be shared with policymakers across Western Canada, as Manning emphasized that concerns about federal government roles are not exclusive to Alberta.
Manning emphasized the importance of restoring democratic values and procedures, particularly for younger generations disillusioned with current political processes. The forum also aims to shed light on Smith’s additional ballot questions, which touch on various issues such as immigration and constitutional negotiations.
Smith has positioned these proposals as a means to address Alberta’s grievances with the federal government while affirming her commitment to remaining part of Canada. Manning noted that supporting these proposals could empower provinces to challenge federal-provincial jurisdiction boundaries, including in areas like immigration.
