Police have apprehended a suspected gunman following a violent incident that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left several others wounded at Brown University in Rhode Island, USA.
The shooting took place in a classroom shortly after 4 pm on Saturday, with the perpetrator fleeing the scene on foot, triggering a 10-hour manhunt. Authorities released a brief video showing a person of interest, dressed in all black, walking near the university building, although it is unclear if this individual is the one in custody.
A statement issued by the university confirmed the fatalities of two individuals and disclosed that eight others had been hospitalized. The university expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and emphasized that the shooter(s) had not been captured yet.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley mentioned that exams were being conducted in the Barus and Holley building where the shooting occurred. Following the incident, a massive search operation involving over 400 law enforcement officers from various agencies was launched to ensure the safety of the community.
Mayor Smiley provided an update on the injured, stating that seven are in stable condition, one is critical, and one has been discharged from the hospital.
