An Atlanta mother has been charged with murder for allegedly fatally stabbing her 11-year-old daughter before attempting suicide. Shannen Grimes, 42, is facing multiple charges including murder, felony murder, cruelty to children, tampering with evidence, and possession of a weapon during a felony in connection with the tragic death of her daughter, Genesis, on November 14 in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
Sandy Springs Police Sgt. Leon Millholland expressed sympathy for the family, community, and officers involved in the difficult situation. Emergency services responded to a welfare check initiated by Grimes’ sister, who reported a suicide attempt by the mother. Upon arrival at the Laurel Grove Condominiums residence, they found Grimes with a wrist injury and Genesis’ body positioned in a recliner.
Grimes allegedly confessed to law enforcement that she was responsible for her daughter’s death. The scene revealed bloodstains in various areas of the residence, along with knives and blood-soaked items. Grimes was hospitalized for her injuries and reportedly sent chilling texts to her sister confessing to the stabbings.
The investigation uncovered Grimes’ belief that harming herself and her daughter would lead to a fresh start. She denied intending to kill her daughter and claimed nobody else was present during the incident. Grimes was taken into custody and awaits a grand jury hearing at Fulton County Jail.
