Zambia’s Hichilema Wins Second Term Amid Election Tensions

Published:

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema secured a second term in office, facing a resilient opposition leader who capitalized on public discontent despite economic improvements. The election commission announced Hichilema’s victory with approximately 60% of valid votes, surpassing his main rival, Brian Mundubile, who garnered around 38%. This marked Hichilema’s seventh presidential bid, leveraging his incumbency advantage, while Mundubile vied for the presidency for the first time.

Hichilema, aged 64, campaigned on his economic achievements since assuming office amidst a pandemic-induced debt crisis in 2021. Zambia, known for its copper reserves, attracted attention from global players like China and the United States due to its mineral wealth.

Following a relatively calm pre-election period, tensions escalated post the August 13 vote. International observers, including the European Union, noted overall peace during the election but criticized restrictions on fundamental freedoms within the electoral process. A sudden surge in tensions led to the arrest of 11 individuals, including prominent opposition members, amid gunfire exchanges witnessed by Mundubile. The electoral commission temporarily halted vote-counting due to reported violence against polling officials and ballot paper theft.

Mundubile alleged potential result tampering and demanded an independent inquiry, a claim refuted by Hichilema’s camp. The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops expressed apprehension over the army’s involvement in the vote tally process, emphasizing the constitutionally mandated role of the police in maintaining order during elections.

Speculations suggest the opposition may challenge the election outcome legally, although the chances of success seem slim, as per Greg Musiker, a Zambia analyst at Signal Risk consultancy. While isolated political unrest might occur in the upcoming days, widespread turmoil is not anticipated.
