Canada Condemns Trump’s Attempt to Rename Lake Ontario

Published:

Political leaders in Canada have criticized an executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, denouncing the decision as offensive and invalid beyond the Canadian border.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford took to a social media platform to affirm that Lake Ontario’s name remains unchanged, emphasizing its significance to Canadians and the global community. Similarly, Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles reiterated that the lake will always be known as Lake Ontario, dismissing any attempts to alter its identity.

Trump’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes situated between Ontario and New York, sparked controversy. The province of Ontario, established in 1867, derived its name from this iconic body of water.

During a speech where a map labeled “Lake America” was displayed, Trump criticized Canada, claiming the country demanded state-like treatment despite not being a state. This move was met with resistance from the Wendat Nation, with Grand Chief Pierre Picard condemning the order as an assault on their historical legacy.

Picard expressed outrage over the decision, emphasizing the cultural and historical significance of the name Ontario to the Wendat Nation. He denounced the renaming as an affront to their identity, emphasizing the importance of preserving their heritage.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, representing the largest city on Lake Ontario’s shores, affirmed that Trump’s actions would not diminish the resolve of Canadians. She labeled the renaming as mere “antics” and highlighted the longstanding history of Lake Ontario’s name, dating back over 400 years.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the enduring nature of the lake’s name, stating that it transcends centuries-old boundaries and remains a symbol of Canadian heritage. The unilateral renaming by Trump, declared as “effective immediately,” drew comparisons to his previous controversial decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”
