“Trump’s Venezuela Regime Change Sparks Global Order Concerns”

Published:

As the former bus driver who ascended to power as Venezuela’s de facto leader, many are relieved to witness Nicholas Maduro’s removal. However, the method of his ousting by Donald Trump has once again disrupted global order. Beyond the actions taken against Venezuela, this incident exemplifies the US President’s expansionist tendencies. Trump’s ambitions extend to acquiring Greenland and reclaiming the Panama Canal, demonstrating a clear intent for regime change in Venezuela. The US’s actions lack international legitimacy and are deemed illegal concerning Venezuela.

While some argue that Maduro, the successor to Hugo Chavez, lacked legitimacy, Venezuela’s descent into economic turmoil under his rule is undeniable. Once a prosperous and vibrant nation akin to the “Switzerland of South America,” Venezuela now faces significant challenges. Although Maduro’s democratic credibility was questioned, the opposition’s victory in the 2024 presidential election did not automatically justify regime change. The situation in Venezuela is further complicated by the significant role of oil, with the US aiming to safeguard the interests of Chevron, a longstanding American oil corporation in Venezuela.

The motives behind the intervention were not solely related to narcotics. Trump’s deployment of a substantial task force in the Caribbean necessitated tangible results, leading to Maduro’s removal. While the details are still unfolding, the outcome appears to be a strategic win for Trump, marking a setback for Venezuela’s traditional allies, including Russia, China, and Iran.

The UK, distancing itself from the strike on Venezuela, finds itself in a delicate position. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European leaders are wary of the questionable legality surrounding the intervention. While Maduro’s departure may benefit Venezuela, the manner in which it was orchestrated raises concerns about global order. The US’s actions reflect a revisionist agenda, challenging the existing world order and prompting comparisons to a rogue state. This shift poses challenges for US allies who historically relied on American leadership in defending liberal democracies and free trade.
