“Drunken Raccoon Ransacks Virginia Liquor Store”

Published:

A state-operated liquor store in Virginia faced an unusual incident as authorities probed a break-in involving a raccoon that crashed through the ceiling while intoxicated. The furry intruder rampaged through the store, leaving behind shattered bottles and a strong smell of alcohol. Staff initially suspected a burglary when they found the shop in disarray with broken glass and spilled spirits littering the floor.

The drunken raccoon was discovered the next day slumped between a toilet and a bin, described as “very intoxicated” by Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter. The animal control officer safely apprehended the raccoon, returning it to the shelter for sobriety before release back into the wild. The raccoon had entered the store by breaking through a ceiling tile, causing damage to the CCTV system and creating chaos by targeting hard liquor over wine.

Wildlife encounters like this are becoming more frequent in the United States, with raccoons known for their curiosity and climbing skills. Experts attribute the rise in such incidents to urban food waste and habitat loss, bringing raccoons closer to human environments where they can cause mischief. In the wild, raccoons have been seen consuming fermented fruit, leading to drunken-like behavior that sometimes results in them entering human spaces and causing damage.

This incident in Virginia is not the first time a liquor store has been targeted by raccoons. Similar break-ins have occurred in other states, including Tennessee and New York, where raccoons have caused havoc inside alcohol-related establishments. Authorities in Virginia have prohibited the raccoon from returning to the store, but expressed relief that no harm came to anyone besides the broken bottles. Officer Martin was commended for ensuring the raccoon’s safe return to its natural habitat after its escapade through the liquor store.
