U.S. President Donald Trump made an announcement on Wednesday night regarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient. Trump revealed that former MLB pitcher Roger Clemens would be honored with the prestigious award, praising him as potentially one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history.
Speaking at a rally in San Antonio, Trump reiterated his support for Clemens to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Clemens, also known as “The Rocket,” has not yet received this recognition due to suspicions of steroid use during his extensive 24-year career with teams such as the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros.
During his speech, Trump emphasized the significance of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, stating that it is one of the highest honors bestowed upon individuals, alongside the Congressional Medal of Honor. He expressed his belief that Clemens would eventually be enshrined in the Hall of Fame, acknowledging him as one of the greatest athletes and pitchers in history.
Trump highlighted the distinction of the medal, stating that it surpasses the prestige of the Hall of Fame. Throughout his presidency, Trump has awarded this honor to various athletes, including Tiger Woods, Roger Staubach, Mariano Rivera, and Lou Holtz.
The unexpected announcement took place towards the end of Trump’s lengthy speech, where Clemens, in attendance at the event, was called to the stage by the president. Expressing his surprise, Clemens remarked that receiving the medal from Trump was a moment that exceeded any achievement in his playing career.
Hailing from Houston, Clemens expressed gratitude for the announcement occurring in Texas and praised Trump as a true winner. Despite facing rejection from baseball writers for suspected use of performance-enhancing drugs, Clemens, along with other players like Barry Bonds, may have alternative paths to Hall of Fame recognition in the future, although the journey remains challenging.
Trump has shown support for other baseball figures, including advocating for a posthumous pardon for Pete Rose, leading to the lifting of the ban on the all-time hits leader. The president has also pushed for Rose’s induction into the Hall of Fame, a goal that has yet to be achieved.
