“DHS Shooting of Dominican Man in NYC Sparks Outrage”

Published:

U.S. federal immigration agents injured a Dominican man during his arrest in New York City, in what the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) described as a “targeted enforcement operation.” The man, identified as 28-year-old Oscar Belgal, survived the shooting and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

The incident sparked anger among the local community and city officials, including New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who condemned the actions of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers involved in the shooting. Mayor Mamdani criticized the lack of clear identification of the agents, stating that they were dressed in construction vests and masks, making it difficult for bystanders to recognize them as ICE officers.

During a press briefing, Mayor Mamdani expressed his frustration, calling the shooting an “outrage.” He further stated that efforts to negotiate the release of the wounded man from federal custody were unsuccessful after conversations with U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

According to Homeland Security, the man had a previous criminal record, including a grand larceny conviction. The shooting took place in the Marble Hill neighborhood, a small area of Manhattan connected to the Bronx. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch explained that Belgal was shot below his left ear while pulling his car into a parking space, with a child in the vehicle who fortunately remained unharmed.

Local officials and residents demanded transparency and accountability from federal authorities regarding the incident. Demonstrators gathered at the scene, chanting for ICE to leave their streets and later marching to the hospital where the injured man was being treated. The DHS defended the actions of its officers, citing the challenges they face in apprehending dangerous individuals in communities due to what they termed as “reckless sanctuary policies.”

Residents in the neighborhood expressed concerns about the lack of clear identification of ICE agents during such operations, emphasizing the need for better transparency and safety measures. The incident reignited discussions about the role and practices of ICE in enforcing immigration laws, with calls for more oversight and accountability in their operations.

The shooting has raised questions about the use of force by ICE agents during arrests and the need for improved communication and cooperation between federal agencies and local law enforcement to prevent similar incidents in the future.
