John Brewer, who previously led the extortion task force in B.C., has taken over McDonald’s role. The RCMP Commissioner, Mike Duheme, stated that no further details on the allegations would be disclosed at this time to the public. He assured that there would be no disruption to RCMP operations or policing services in the province.
The statement indicated that the allegations are currently being investigated and were recently brought to the attention of the RCMP. McDonald, who also held the position of deputy commissioner, had a significant career within the RCMP, including serving as the head of the Surrey RCMP and overseeing federal and organized crime investigations in British Columbia.
While CBC News has contacted the RCMP for additional information, McDonald’s profile has been removed from the RCMP’s senior executive committee webpage. In his 2024 bio, McDonald was noted for his extensive law enforcement experience spanning almost three decades, with previous work at the Canada Border Services Agency. He had led various key units, such as the Lower Mainland’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and the anti-gang Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, and frequently engaged with the media at press events.
McDonald was honored with the Order of Merit of the Police Forces in 2015 for his contributions. The E Division of the B.C. RCMP, which McDonald oversaw, is the largest among the force’s 15 divisions. John Brewer, now serving as the interim commanding officer and deputy commissioner of E Division, was formerly an assistant commissioner with the RCMP. Commissioner Duheme expressed full confidence in Brewer, highlighting his esteemed status within the senior leadership team of the RCMP.
