Fifteen-year-old Finn Holland, a passionate animal lover, sprang into action upon learning that a shark had washed ashore near his residence in Maces Bay, a coastal community in southern New Brunswick. Over the weekend, Holland, accompanied by his family, drove their utility vehicle down to the beach at Maces Bay, situated southwest of Saint John.
Upon arrival, they discovered a shark that appeared injured and nearly lifeless. Despite initial hesitation due to its size – approximately two meters long and weighing around 70 kilograms – Holland decided to assist the creature. Identified later as a porbeagle shark, he carefully guided it back into the water by its tail, allowing the shark to swim away.
Reflecting on the experience, Holland expressed amazement and fascination at the encounter, emphasizing the gratification of helping the distressed animal. His mother, Jill Holland, remarked that Finn’s impromptu act of kindness was in line with his character, illustrating his innate sense of duty towards animals.
Despite residing in the area for over a decade without any prior shark sightings, the Hollands’ encounter with the porbeagle shark was deemed uncommon by shark expert Neil Hammerschlag. He highlighted the rarity of such sightings in the natural environment, particularly for species like the porbeagle shark.
Notably, Hammerschlag explained that porbeagle sharks possess a unique ability to regulate their body temperature in colder waters, enabling them to navigate the chilly Atlantic Canadian and New England regions. The shark’s presence in shallow waters, contrary to its typical habitat, indicated potential distress or previous entanglement in fishing gear, according to the expert.
Moreover, Hammerschlag underscored the declining population of porbeagle sharks due to overfishing, emphasizing the significance of conservation efforts. While the species was declared endangered in the Atlantic Ocean by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada in 2004, no official federal designation has been enacted.
In light of the support garnered from the community following his act of rescue, Finn expressed gratitude for the opportunity to assist the shark. Reflecting on the experience, he expressed a sense of fulfillment in knowing that he had made a positive impact, despite the inability of animals to convey gratitude verbally.
