Romanian prosecutors have formally charged social media influencer Andrew Tate with trafficking minors, money laundering, engaging in sexual activities with a minor, and tampering with witnesses, while his brother Tristan faces complicity charges. The Tate siblings, former dual U.S. and British citizens and ex-kickboxers, were apprehended in Miami in late July following a request for extradition from the UK.
Primarily residing in Romania since 2017, the Tates have been subjects of a criminal inquiry in the country since December 2022, focusing on allegations such as human trafficking. Despite the accusations, they have consistently refuted any wrongdoing.
According to Romanian authorities, the Tates enticed their victims by feigning romantic intentions or marriage, later coercing them into producing pornographic material for a webcam enterprise. In response to the indictments, the Tates’ legal representative, Eugen Vidineac, pledged to scrutinize the charges meticulously and challenge any perceived deficiencies through the legal system.
The Tate brothers are currently held in U.S. custody as a judge deliberates on the extradition request to the UK, where they face charges of rape. The Romanian anti-organized crime prosecuting unit DIICOT, responsible for the Tates’ investigation, has not clarified whether they will pursue extradition from the United States.
While the Tates could be tried in absentia in Romania, the trial process is not imminent. As per Romanian legislation, the indictment will be reviewed by a preliminary court chamber to ensure its legality before proceeding. Although the law stipulates a 60-day period for the preliminary chamber judge to finalize the report, indictments typically endure longer deliberation periods.
DIICOT revealed that one of Andrew Tate’s victims was initially seduced at the age of 15 in the UK in 2012 before being relocated to Bucharest, Romania, where she was subjected to physical and mental coercion for producing pornographic content on social platforms. Tristan was implicated as an accomplice who employed physical force to manipulate the victim.
Prosecutors further alleged that the brothers retained $1.25 million from the victim’s video chat earnings, constituting approximately 80% of her total income. They purportedly attempted to launder the proceeds by purchasing four luxury vehicles.
Previously facing charges of human trafficking in Romania, the brothers encountered a setback when the Bucharest court of appeals remanded the case to prosecutors in late 2024 due to the exclusion of certain evidence. Andrew Tate, known for his misogynistic views, had expressed his relocation to Romania as a strategic move due to perceived leniency in law enforcement.
The Tate brothers have cultivated a substantial following, predominantly among young men, by projecting an extravagant and hyper-masculine persona centered on fast cars and attractive companions.
