Samsung recently introduced its latest lineup of innovative foldable phones, which could pose a challenge for Apple. The tech giant from Korea unveiled three new devices, with the flagship being the Galaxy Z Fold 8, featuring a redesigned appearance.
Unlike previous Fold models with a tall cover screen and square main panel, Samsung has opted for a shorter, wider “passport-style” design, offering a unique look when closed but transforming into a practical shape when unfolded. The device boasts a spacious 7.6-inch display resembling a compact tablet more than a smartphone, catering well to activities like streaming, binge-watching, and gaming while on the move.
This launch holds significance as Apple is anticipated to reveal its first foldable iPhone later this year, possibly adopting a similar radical design. If these speculations hold true, Samsung has taken an early lead over its major competitor.
Apart from the design, Samsung is also pushing boundaries in other aspects with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 being the thinnest and lightest Fold model to date, weighing just 180g. It features an improved hinge for enhanced durability and a reduced risk of damage over time.
The device’s expansive screen is equipped with Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating for enhanced visibility in bright sunlight. Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and a 4,800mAh battery, the phone can charge from empty to 63% in only 30 minutes.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 incorporates a dual-camera system for quality photography and Gorilla Glass for protection against scratches and impacts. Samsung has integrated its latest Galaxy AI tools for smarter photo editing, productivity enhancements, and better search capabilities.
Starting at £1,699, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is open for pre-orders, while Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone, expected later this year, could cost over £2,000.
In addition to the Fold 8, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, resembling last year’s Fold 7 but featuring upgrades such as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and a significant camera improvement. The rear camera setup now includes a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera for enhanced low-light photography and 8K video recording.
The Fold 8 Ultra showcases a new Flex Titanium hinge and a refined display structure for increased strength and reduced crease visibility. With a larger 5,000mAh battery providing all-day power, the phone can charge up to 67% in around 30 minutes, starting at £1,899.
Completing the series is the Galaxy Z Flip 8, maintaining Samsung’s popular clamshell design but now thinner and lighter. The device features an improved external cover display, a stronger aluminium hinge, faster performance, and upgraded camera functionalities, starting at £1,149.
