Recent Russian assaults on Ukraine’s power infrastructure demonstrate a deep-seated animosity towards Ukraine, casting doubt on the possibility of a substantial peace agreement.
With a lack of coherent military tactics beyond sending successive waves of troops into combat and making slow progress, the focus on targeting Ukrainian civilians seems senseless.
Throughout nearly four years of resisting this abhorrent large-scale invasion, Ukrainian civilians have shown remarkable resilience, defying the odds. Despite facing severe winter conditions and a lack of heating that affected thousands last night, they have remained steadfast in their defiance against Putin’s offensives.
While the strategy of attacking civilian resources with costly missiles and drones fails to weaken Ukrainian resolve, it underscores Russian President Vladimir Putin’s callous disregard for any commitments he makes regarding the conflict in Ukraine, particularly to President Donald Trump.
Trump had stated that Putin agreed to refrain from targeting Kyiv’s energy supplies by exploiting harsh winter conditions to undermine civilian morale. However, the temporary pause in attacks brokered with and promised to President Trump was merely delaying the inevitable.
By postponing attacks, as purportedly agreed with Trump, Putin was simply postponing the inevitable, culminating in a brutal assault—one of the most significant in recent weeks—on Ukraine. Putin’s delaying tactics, allowing for pauses and sidetracking peace negotiations, are becoming increasingly limited.
While awaiting further discussions in Abu Dhabi, Putin could not resist asserting dominance through threats and displays of power. However, last night’s assault is unlikely to advance Putin’s strategic goals in the war, serving more as an attempt to impress Trump’s negotiating team of his apparent success.
This move reflects desperation and a lack of respect towards US President Donald Trump, who is being continuously deceived by Kremlin falsehoods, placing Kyiv in a dire predicament, almost an existential crossroads.
The choice for Kyiv is now clear: to challenge Washington’s misguided trust in Putin’s deceitful tactics and time-wasting as Russian troops slowly advance on the frontlines.
Alternatively, Kyiv can opt to continue stalling in the hope that Ukraine’s troops, despite being outnumbered and underequipped, can hold the line, showcasing their remarkable resourcefulness and bravery on the battlefield.
Volodymyr Zelensky can only hope for increased support from Europe, a breakthrough, or a significant event that compels Washington to finally recognize the Kremlin’s pursuit of victory over Kyiv.
