Pope Leo revealed on Sunday his plans to undergo surgery in the upcoming days to eliminate a nodular lesion detected on his lung during recent medical examinations. The 71-year-old Pontiff mentioned that the nodule was identified early and is contained within a specific area. The Vatican confirmed that the surgery is scheduled for early in the week, with an anticipated recovery period of around a week.
During his Sunday midday blessing, the American Pope disclosed the news to the public, expressing gratitude for their support and requesting their prayers. Lung nodules are small abnormal spots, typically less than three centimeters in size, that may appear on a chest or abdomen CT scan. They are often detected during scans conducted for reasons unrelated to lung cancer screening, such as trauma or lung infections.
Elected as Pope by the global cardinals in May 2025, Leo is considered relatively young for a leader within the Church. He has been known to be in good health, regularly engaging in physical activities like playing tennis weekly and swimming at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo.
Despite having a significant trip planned to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17, it remains uncertain whether the surgery and recovery process will impact his travel itinerary. Nonetheless, Leo indicated his intention to proceed with the journey during his remarks on Sunday.
In a recent medical examination, Pope Leo informed the audience in Italian about the discovery of a small, localized nodule in his lung. He emphasized that the nodule was detected at an early stage and in a contained manner, leading doctors to recommend surgical intervention, which he has decided to undergo in the coming days. Leo expressed his appreciation for the spiritual support received and requested continued prayers from the public.
Before addressing his health situation, Pope Leo acknowledged the upcoming trip and thanked the faithful for their prayers concerning the pastoral visit he is preparing for. His predecessor, Pope Francis, passed away on April 21, 2025, following health complications related to a stroke and respiratory issues.
Leo is expected to have the surgery at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, a facility with a history of treating popes, including Francis. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who visited Francis during his final hospitalization, extended her support and that of the Italian government to Leo as he prepares to face this medical challenge in the days ahead. The presence of a lung nodule does not necessarily indicate cancer, as the vast majority are benign according to the American Thoracic Society.
