“Over 2,000 Sausage Dogs Attend Record-Breaking Beach Stroll”

Published:

A massive gathering of over 2,000 lively sausage dogs took part in a beach stroll. The procession, consisting of hundreds of dachshunds and their owners, paraded from the harbor to the pier in Southwold, Suffolk. Originating in 2017, this annual event has evolved into one of the UK’s prominent gatherings for dog enthusiasts worldwide. It is recognized as the largest assembly of a single dog breed globally.

Participants displayed their creativity with fancy dress costumes, including a couple dressed as condiments while their dachshunds sported hot dog-style attire. Some attendees even traveled from as far as the United States to join the “Sausage Stroll” on Sunday. The march, led by a towering organizer in a 7-foot dachshund costume, garnered support from beach hut owners who provided water bowls for the thirsty pups.

Laura Baggott, the event’s founder at 34, launched the initiative in 2017 with 150 dogs and has witnessed exponential growth each year. In 2022, the event set a world record with 2,238 same-breed dogs in attendance. Laura mentioned losing track after counting over 1,500 dachshunds on this year’s walk. Participants were encouraged to donate to the charity Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD.

Despite challenges last year, including concerns about meeting safety requirements, the event was nearly canceled. However, East Suffolk Council granted permission just days before the scheduled date, relieving the sausage dog community. The organization’s mission involves providing support to dachshunds suffering from Intervertebral Disc Disease by offering strollers and mobility aids tailored to their needs.
