Tennis icon Novak Djokovic has voiced concerns regarding the controversial circumstances surrounding Jannik Sinner’s doping case and subsequent suspension in early 2025. The Italian player accepted a three-month ban after testing positive twice in 2024.
Initially, Sinner escaped penalties when a panel determined that the positive tests for clostebol, an anabolic steroid, were due to contamination during a massage by his coach. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) concluded that Sinner was not at fault for the failed tests uncovered in March 2024.
Last year, ITIA defended its handling of Sinner’s case and refuted claims of preferential treatment. In February, Sinner reached an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency, which contested the initial decision to spare him from a ban.
Ranked No. 2 globally, Sinner completed his suspension between February and May this year, strategically returning in time to compete in the French Open starting in late May.
Djokovic, who lost to Sinner in the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon, shared his thoughts on the matter during a conversation with Piers Morgan, expressing disbelief at the situation and criticizing the handling of the case, citing various discrepancies and the timing of the suspension to avoid major tournaments.
Djokovic faced his own controversy during the pandemic when he was removed from Australia in 2022 for not being vaccinated against Covid-19. He clarified that he has always supported freedom of choice regarding vaccination.
