A British woman visiting Turkey for breast implant surgery has reached out on social media for support following a frightening earthquake experience. Identified as Courtney, she posted a video on TikTok after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Balikesir region, urging people to pray for their safety amid the intense thunder and lightning.
Witnessing buildings collapsing in Sindirgi and numerous injuries in the area, the earthquake’s impact was felt as far as Istanbul, over 200 miles away. Courtney, uncertain about the earthquake’s severity, expressed concerns about the challenging weather conditions hindering their travel plans due to the 6.2 magnitude quake and the impending storm.
In the aftermath, authorities reported no casualties but noted 22 individuals injured from panic-induced falls. Many residents opted to stay outdoors fearing further building collapses, prompting the opening of mosques, schools, and sports halls to provide shelter. Turkey’s geographical location on fault lines makes it prone to frequent earthquakes, with recent incidents causing fatalities and extensive damages.
The earthquake, occurring at 1.048pm local time (7.48pm GMT) at a depth of 5.99km, led to multiple aftershocks, exacerbating the situation. As the community assesses the aftermath, efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety and well-being of residents affected by the seismic event.
