Nigel Farage is facing calls to denounce one of his party’s MPs who expressed frustration at the abundance of Black and Asian individuals in TV ads. Sarah Pochin, a member of Reform UK, made these remarks during an appearance on TalkTV in response to a viewer’s inquiry about demographic representation in commercials.
Following a viewer’s assertion that such ads negatively portray white people, the Runcorn and Helsby MP echoed the sentiment. Pochin stated, “I get irritated when I see ads predominantly featuring non-white individuals rather than white.”
Under further questioning by the host, Peter Cardwell, Pochin reiterated her stance, criticizing what she perceived as an overwhelming influence of “woke” culture on television. She emphasized that the advertising landscape fails to accurately reflect the demographics of society, particularly the white population.
Anna Turley, Chair of the Labour Party, condemned Pochin’s comments, urging Farage to clarify his stance on the issue. Turley criticized Pochin for seemingly focusing on racial demographics in commercials and accused Reform of promoting division rather than unity.
In response to the backlash, Pochin clarified that she misspoke and intended to highlight the advertising industry’s excessive focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). She expressed regret for any offense caused and pledged to communicate more accurately in the future.
