A massive sinkhole emerged in front of a luxurious mansion in Malibu, believed to be owned by Nicolas Cage, leading to the collapse of the driveway. The incident resulted in a gas leak early Tuesday morning, which was swiftly addressed by authorities and utility services. SoCalGas managed to control the leak after a few hours but decided to temporarily halt natural gas services in a portion of the street to prevent potential coastal erosion.
The sinkhole, measuring between 7.5 to nine meters in depth and 18 meters in width, extends into the roadway, prompting officials to declare a local emergency and evacuate 31 properties in the vicinity. Although requests for comments from Cage’s representatives went unanswered, property records indicate that the mansion was sold in 2024, with the prior owner confirming Cage as the buyer.
The mansion sustained damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area, attributed to the remnants of Hurricane Marie transitioning into a tropical storm. While the storm did not make landfall, it triggered heavy rains and hazardous waves along the Southern California coast over the holiday weekend.
In response to the incident, the City of Malibu highlighted that it is monitoring coastal erosion at various vulnerable points along the coastline, including the Pacific Coast Highway and Palisades Fire burn area. The upscale neighborhood, nestled between the ocean and the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, has been significantly impacted by the sinkhole.
Nicolas Cage, aged 62, recently featured in the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and is set to portray John Madden in an upcoming biopic about the renowned NFL coach and commentator. With a prolific career spanning over 100 films, Cage secured an Oscar for his role in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
