The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is considering reactivating its net zero advisory council, which was established by the former Liberal government at the end of 2021. The council aimed to provide recommendations for achieving the province’s greenhouse gas reduction targets for 2030 and the more ambitious goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
Net zero involves creating an economy with minimal greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century, utilizing technology to capture or remove any remaining emissions from the atmosphere. The council, comprising members with diverse backgrounds, offered advice on energy efficiency programs, organic waste reduction, and research and development investments.
Although the original council’s term ended in 2024, with the final report released in mid-2025, there have been no new appointments, rendering the council inactive. However, the Department of Environment, Conservation, and Climate Change is currently assessing the possibility of reactivating the council.
Nicholas Mercer, a former council member now working at the University of Prince Edward Island, supports the idea of reviving the council with improvements. He emphasized the importance of public awareness, direct participation opportunities, and clear funding allocation for the council’s activities.
The original council’s chair, Kieran Hanley, expressed pride in the council’s work and highlighted its role in shaping discussions on the province’s economy and environment. The council’s final report will inform the development of a new, multi-year climate action plan for Newfoundland and Labrador.
