Media Mogul Buried Alive: Kidnapping Scheme Gone Awry

Published:

A prominent figure in the media industry met a tragic end after being buried alive in a 6ft box during a kidnapping that went terribly wrong.

Stephen Small, a well-known businessman, fell victim to a misguided scheme orchestrated by a small-time drug dealer named Danny Edwards. Edwards, seeking a $1 million ransom, abducted Small, who hailed from a family with significant ties to broadcasting and publishing.

Initially planning to hold Small in rural Chicago until the ransom was paid, the situation took a deadly turn. Edwards, posing as a police officer, tricked Small into his grasp and then resorted to extreme measures when the ransom demands were not met.

Small, aged 30 at the time of the abduction, was from a family deeply rooted in media ownership, adding to the complexity of the case. Edwards, with the help of his coerced accomplice Nancy Rish, buried Small in a makeshift box in a remote forest, equipped with minimal provisions to sustain him.

Despite efforts to track down the perpetrators, it took years to bring justice to Small’s tragic demise. Rish, who endured abuse and threats from Edwards, was eventually granted a reduced sentence in 2022 after proving she was a victim of intimate partner violence.

Rish, expressing remorse and accepting responsibility for her actions, successfully challenged her life sentence due to changing laws regarding victims of domestic violence. Her defense highlighted the lasting impact of domestic abuse on her life, emphasizing her coerced involvement in the crime.

Following legal proceedings, Rish’s sentences were adjusted, with the Small family not opposing the decision. Rish was released in February 2022 on parole, marking the end of a long and harrowing chapter in this tragic story.
