The family of a schoolgirl who was brutally raped and murdered by a 27-year-old woman claimed that the girl’s father succumbed to grief following the tragic events.
Shortly after being reported missing in October 2022, the body of 12-year-old Lola Daviet was discovered mutilated and concealed in a plastic box outside the Paris apartment building where she resided with her family.
Algerian-born Dahbia Benkired was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 30 years for the rape, torture, and murder of Lola. She became the first woman in French legal history to receive a whole-life sentence.
Benkired was believed to have carried out the heinous act in retaliation against the girl’s mother for denying her access to the complex.
A controversy erupted in France when it was revealed that Benkired had overstayed her student visa and was arrested in October 2022. Lola’s parents denounced any exploitation of their daughter’s name for political purposes.
Mr. Daviet passed away in February the previous year at the age of 49, reportedly consumed by sorrow after his daughter’s tragic demise.
Lola’s brother, Thibault Daviet, represented the family in court and urged for truth and justice in the case. CCTV footage presented during the trial depicted Benkired handling the victim’s body in a public setting post the murder.
During the trial, it was disclosed that mysterious markings ‘1’ and ‘0’ were found on Lola’s feet, indicating she had suffered 38 wounds before succumbing to asphyxia.
As graphic evidence of the injuries was displayed in court, it was emphasized that the victim had endured severe physical and psychological trauma.
Lola was last seen entering the apartment building where Benkired resided and was later discovered in a plastic box in the streets of Paris.
Benkired expressed remorse in court and was ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
