Canada’s national police force announced on Monday that a 51-year-old individual has been taken into custody for allegedly issuing death threats against Prime Minister Mark Carney. Marc-André Porlier, a resident of Montreal, has been formally charged with making threats to cause harm or death, as per a press release from the RCMP. The threats in question were reportedly conveyed via email to various undisclosed recipients, which included a senator, as per the police statement. It was also noted in the charges that the accused made threats towards “all Canadian police officers.”
According to law enforcement officials, Porlier had previously been convicted of arson and vandalism for setting a church ablaze in Toronto back in 2017. The RCMP confirmed this information to CBC News, stating that he was under probation for those offenses. Porlier made a court appearance on Saturday, though it should be emphasized that the charges against him have not been substantiated in court proceedings.
