Jannik Sinner, the current top-ranked male tennis player in the world, has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open due to a knee injury. Sinner, who hasn’t played since winning his second consecutive Wimbledon title last month, also withdrew from the National Bank Open in Montreal last week. The 24-year-old Sinner, who holds five Grand Slam titles, only needs to win the French Open to achieve a career Grand Slam.
In a statement released by tournament officials, Sinner explained his decision: “After discussions with my medical team, I regret to announce my withdrawal from the Cincinnati Masters 1000 event. My right knee has been causing me discomfort, and despite intensive treatment, I acknowledge that I am not yet fit to compete. I am disappointed to miss out on Cincinnati but am eager to return next year and am now concentrating on preparing for the upcoming U.S. Open.”
Following Sinner’s withdrawal, Carlos Alcaraz also opted out of the Cincinnati event citing a persistent wrist injury. Consequently, fans in Cincinnati will not witness the participation of the world’s top two players in the men’s singles event starting Saturday. Notably, Sinner clinched the Cincinnati title two years ago, using it as a springboard to win the subsequent U.S. Open. However, last year, Alcaraz defeated Sinner in the U.S. Open final, and the 23-year-old Spaniard is set to defend his title as the tournament’s main draw begins on August 30.
