Roman Kamyshnyy, aged 46, was sentenced to two concurrent life prison terms without parole for 25 years after being convicted by a jury of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his 10 and 17-year-old sons.
According to domestic violence expert Peter Jaffe, although it may be difficult to comprehend, instances of a parent killing their own child are not unheard of. Jaffe highlighted that approximately 30 children in Canada fall victim to parental homicides annually, with about half of these cases occurring within contexts of intimate partner violence.
A study earlier this year revealed that New Brunswick had the highest number of domestic violence-related homicides in Atlantic Canada between 2012 and 2022. The province also exhibited the highest annual death rate, adjusted for population, among the four provinces studied.
In the case of Kamyshnyy, the Crown argued that the murders were motivated by vengeance, suggesting that he used his sons’ lives as a means of punishing his ex-wife for alleged infidelity. The tragic incident unfolded on January 29, 2025, when the boys were discovered stabbed in the family’s residence, where Kamyshnyy resided until he could find a new place to live.
Witness A, the boys’ mother, expressed disbelief that Kamyshnyy would harm their children, emphasizing that she would not have left them alone with him if she had anticipated such a horrific outcome.
During legal proceedings, the Crown prosecutor alleged a history of physical intimate partner violence in the relationship, shedding light on the complexities leading to the tragic incident.
