Nigel Farage is facing criticism for his recent remarks about Russia, with accusations that he is attempting to backtrack on his previous comments labeling Vladimir Putin as a “very bad dude.” The leader of Reform UK defended himself in an interview by dismissing claims that he is soft on Russia and emphasized his support for measures such as shooting down Russian jets in NATO airspace and utilizing frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine.
Farage insisted that he does not sympathize with Putin, calling him irrational and expressing disappointment in the lack of progress in dealing with the Russian leader. However, he also reiterated his belief that NATO and EU expansion contributed to Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.
The Reform party has been under scrutiny following former leader Nathan Gill’s admission of accepting bribes to make pro-Russian statements while serving in the European Parliament. Farage acknowledged this incident but maintained that it was an isolated case.
On the other hand, Labour chair Anna Turley criticized Farage’s shifting stance on Russia, accusing him of aligning with Putin’s narrative on the Ukraine conflict. Keir Starmer and Defence Secretary John Healey have previously raised concerns about Farage’s admiration for Putin and questioned his trustworthiness on national security matters.
Farage’s past praise for Putin in a 2014 interview resurfaced, where he commended Putin’s strategic decisions in Syria while distancing himself politically from the Russian leader. Despite attempts to clarify his position, Farage continues to face skepticism over his views on Russia and Ukraine.
