EE mobile customers are being cautioned about a resurgence of a fraudulent text message scam. Security experts from Bitdefender have observed an increase in deceptive messages targeting EE users, claiming they risk losing significant reward points unless they take immediate action.
The scam involves cybercriminals masquerading as the popular EE network to entice individuals into clicking on malicious links that lead to counterfeit websites. These fraudulent sites are designed to capture login credentials, enabling the scammers to profit illicitly.
The success of this scam hinges on creating a sense of urgency, with perpetrators counting on recipients to react hastily without careful consideration.
Bitdefender highlighted the manipulation tactic employed by scammers, emphasizing that the time-sensitive nature of the messages is meant to instill a fear of missing out. They cautioned that clicking on the provided link redirects users to a fake site, not the official EE platform.
Genuine alerts from EE will only be visible within users’ official accounts and not through unsolicited texts. Any message emphasizing urgency or prompting immediate responses should raise suspicion. Users are advised to forward any suspicious texts to 7726 and delete them promptly.
This type of scam has previously targeted EE customers, with instances reported earlier this year where individuals received convincing but deceitful messages regarding reward points. Some customers shared their experiences, warning others to be cautious and avoid falling for the scam.
EE has reiterated that they do not run a points-based program and has provided examples of scam messages circulating, urging users to redeem supposed rewards within a tight timeframe.
EE’s latest guidance includes avoiding clicking on unfamiliar links in text messages, refraining from responding to suspicious messages, not calling back numbers provided in such texts, and never sharing personal or financial information.
EE users are advised to exercise vigilance and caution when handling unexpected messages to safeguard against falling victim to scams.
