Two days post the conclusion of the Edmonton Marathon, the race director issues an apology following the discovery of an accounting error in managing detours, resulting in the race courses being longer than intended. This admission validates suspicions held by many participants.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Tom Keogh, the Edmonton Marathon race director, disclosed that both the half-marathon and marathon courses were found to be 674.7 meters longer than initially believed. Keogh acknowledged the mistake and expressed regret for the oversight in calculating detour-related adjustments to the course.
Keogh took ownership of the error, stating, “We take full responsibility for this oversight.” He also mentioned engaging with participants to address concerns raised by elite and amateur runners regarding the race distances. Despite previous assertions of accurate course measurements, Keogh admitted to a miscalculation that led to the extended course lengths.
The Edmonton Marathon, recognized as a qualifier for prestigious running events like the Boston Marathon, is collaborating with Athletics Canada and other relevant partners to resolve the impact of the error on this year’s results. Elite runner Mitch Walz, who had trained extensively for the marathon, expressed disappointment after realizing his finishing time did not align with his effort due to the extended course.
