Conservative Shadow Home Secretary Struggles to Name Welsh Party Leader

Published:

Top Conservative politician Chris Philp struggled to identify the leader of his party in Wales during a challenging television interview. The Shadow Home Secretary, when pressed by GB News presenter Chris Hope, evaded the question multiple times before admitting he couldn’t recall the name, stating that the party’s new leader’s name had slipped his mind.

Hope pointed out that the leader in question is Darren Millar, emphasizing the significance as the Welsh Conservative party faces challenges. He criticized Philp, suggesting that the party is losing ground in Wales and focusing more on its English heartlands, predicting a bleak outcome in the upcoming elections.

In response, Philp defended his party’s efforts, stating that they are governing for the entire country and highlighted various initiatives proposed at their recent party conference, including welfare savings, stamp duty cuts, immigration enforcement, and police recruitment.

Darren Millar assumed leadership of the Welsh Conservatives in the Senedd after Andrew RT Davies stepped down from the position. Davies had faced scrutiny over the party’s direction, surviving a vote of no confidence by a narrow margin.

Recent electoral results showed the Tories securing only 2% of the vote in a Caerphilly by-election, trailing behind Plaid Cymru, Reform, and Labour. Meanwhile, Philp faced criticism for his wavering stance on whether comments made by Reform MP Sarah Pochin regarding race in advertisements were racist. Initially avoiding labeling her as such, he later acknowledged her remarks as racist and emphasized the need for accountability.

Philp condemned Pochin’s comments, affirming that they were wrong and racist, and supported her apology for the inappropriate remarks.
