Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh claimed her first-ever gold medal at the Pan Pacific swimming competition in Irvine, Calif., by setting a championship record in the women’s 400-metre individual medley. McIntosh finished the race in four minutes and 28.01 seconds, outpacing Australia’s Jenna Forrester, who took the silver medal. Argentine swimmer Agostina Hein secured the bronze.
McIntosh expressed her thoughts after the race, mentioning that she aimed for a strong performance in all strokes but acknowledged room for improvement. Despite feeling she could have done better, McIntosh was delighted to win gold for Canada. The Canadian national anthem playing after her victory was met with excitement from the crowd, especially a group of enthusiastic young spectators.
Additionally, McIntosh contributed to Canada’s success in the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay, securing a bronze medal alongside her teammates. The Canadian team finished third with a time of 7:52.74, behind Australia and the United States.
In other events, Tristan Jankovics and Lorne Wigginton represented Canada in the men’s 400 IM, placing 7th and 8th, respectively. Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsushita set a new championship record in this event. Taylor Ruck finished fifth in the women’s 100 free.
Furthermore, Australian Meg Harris clinched the gold in the women’s 100 free, edging out American Gretchen Walsh. Taylor Ruck also achieved success by securing bronze medals in various events.
In the women’s 100 breaststroke, Canadian swimmer Alexanne Lepage delivered a personal best time, narrowly missing the national record held by Annamay Pierse. Teammate Sophie Angus also competed in this event. McKenzie Siroky of the U.S. emerged as the victor in this category.
Several other Canadian swimmers participated in various events, with Ingrid Wilm, Oliver Dawson, Javier Acevedo, and relay teams showcasing their talent at the Pan Pacific Championships.
