Canada’s top science adviser suggests that the Canadian government should engage in a structured evaluation of its handling of the COVID-19 crisis. The objective is to enhance the nation’s readiness for future health emergencies and to address the concerns of Canadians effectively.
In an interview with CBC’s “The House,” Mona Nemer emphasized the importance of acknowledging and understanding the diverse emotions stemming from the pandemic’s impact. She highlighted that people have varying reasons for their discontent with COVID-19 measures, such as economic losses, personal tragedies, and disruptions in education.
Nemer, an impartial adviser, stressed the need for a non-political and focused reflection process by Ottawa. She emphasized the importance of addressing specific questions to prevent a prolonged review that may lead to forgetting crucial lessons learned during the crisis.
Regarding vaccine discussions, Nemer urged for a balanced perspective, reminding that vaccines have been instrumental in saving lives and reducing daily deaths. She emphasized the significance of conducting discussions and reflections constructively to prepare the country and its citizens for future health challenges.
In a separate development, Conservative MP Dean Allison announced plans for an inquiry in September to listen to Canadians affected by COVID-19 vaccines. The inquiry aims to provide a platform for individuals to share their concerns and experiences in a non-partisan setting.
Nemer also raised concerns about the global response to other infectious diseases, particularly the Ebola outbreak. She highlighted the need for improved diagnostics and integrated pandemic preparedness into routine health services. Nemer emphasized that despite the urgency during the COVID-19 crisis, the threat of other diseases like Ebola, mpox, and hantavirus persists, requiring continued vigilance and preparedness.
Recognizing the importance of public trust in authorities during health crises, Nemer stressed the need to build and maintain trust outside of emergencies. She emphasized the valuable lessons learned from the pandemic about the necessity of public trust and proactive preparedness strategies between crises.
