The Canadian government has adjusted its list of counter-tariffs, removing seafood and fish products while adding copper wire and charcoal to maintain equal measures against the U.S. Finance Canada announced the removal of seafood products late Wednesday, citing industry feedback as the reason for the change.
In response to recent tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, Ottawa announced increased duties on American steel and aluminum products to 50%, along with a 25% tariff on various seafood items. Additionally, copper wire, charcoal, plaster sheets, tiles, and printed photographs will now face a 50% tariff starting on September 8.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that the decision to remove U.S. seafood from the tariff list was made in Canada’s best interests after listening to Canadians. He emphasized that the update reflects the government’s commitment to supporting Canadian industries targeted by U.S. tariffs.
