Detectives investigating the case of a deceased newborn infant found in a field suspect that the baby might have been stored in a refrigerator years before her discovery. They believe that a pair of soiled underpants could be a crucial piece of evidence in the inquiry.
The remains of Baby Ava were located in a snowy field in Little Hulton, Salford, Greater Manchester, on November 20 of the previous year. Following the discovery, the authorities initiated an investigation with the assistance of specialists to determine the circumstances surrounding Ava and the duration of time she had been at the site.
It is reported that Ava was approximately 39 weeks gestation and potentially stillborn. Efforts have been ongoing to locate the infant’s mother. A significant breakthrough has now occurred as investigators believe that the undergarment discovered at the scene may lead them to Ava’s parents.
The unique adult-sized underwear, adorned with cartoon donkeys, is one of the fresh leads that could help unravel the mystery. Baby Ava, as named by the police at the commencement of the investigation, was wrapped in the women’s briefs. The leading detective disclosed a significant update on the progress of the case, almost a year after the distressing find. Ava’s burial site measured 12cm in depth and 35cm by 31cm in dimensions.
Detective Chief Inspector Charlotte Whalley stated to Manchester Evening News: “Based on factors like leaf litter and soil composition, investigators believe that Ava was placed at Ashtons Fields site no earlier than the start of November.” She added that the timeframe for the relocation to the site was between November 1 and November 20. However, due to the advanced decomposition, pinpointing the exact birth date has proven challenging.
Whalley speculated that Ava had been in another location before being moved to Ashtons Fields. The level of decomposition suggests she could not have deteriorated so rapidly within that timeframe. The possibility that she had been preserved, possibly in a household refrigerator, a few years prior to her birth is being considered.
The detective emphasized the importance of the distinctive underpants in the investigation, noting their unique design and the fact that they are not domestically manufactured. DNA profiles have been extracted from the garment, including a male profile, although no matches have been found in the National Database so far.
Authorities are also exploring familial DNA analysis using Ava’s DNA to potentially identify her mother conclusively. The child’s heritage remains unknown due to the condition of her body, but it is known that Ava had dark hair. Police are cross-referencing the registration numbers of vehicles that parked near the discovery location between November 1 and 20.
The discovery of Ava’s remains is believed to have been facilitated by natural elements, with speculation that a wild animal may have brought her to the surface shortly after her placement at the site.
