“UNISON General Secretary Advocates for Public Service Workers”

Published:

Having served as a social worker for many years, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by public service workers. Despite being 18 months into a new government, the situation remains dire for my colleagues.

Our salaries have continuously decreased while the cost of living has soared. Additionally, we have watched in dismay as essential services, once integral to our communities, have been systematically dismantled by policymakers.

Throughout my career within the local authority, I have observed the detrimental impact of funding cuts. Billions of pounds have been divested since 2010, leading to significant reductions in essential services like in Bolton, where council funding has been slashed by over a quarter.

The current Labour administration has fallen short in addressing these issues, failing to prioritize the working class. To truly make a difference, policies must focus on improving wages and reducing expenses, not just rhetoric about national renewal.

A concrete step towards progress would be providing public sector workers with inflation-proof pay raises and implementing an Employment Rights Bill 2.0 to ensure fair collective bargaining. As the UNISON general secretary, my primary goal is to advocate for ordinary workers and enhance their well-being.

It is imperative for the government to shift its focus from military expenditures towards investing in public services. By redirecting resources to rebuild our social infrastructure and revitalize industries, we can create a better future for all. This approach will not only enhance people’s lives but also counter extremist ideologies.

As we enter a new year filled with hope and possibilities, it is disheartening to see four young individuals detained for their peaceful protest against injustices. The government’s complicity in such actions undermines our commitment to justice and freedom.

By standing against oppressive regimes and advocating for human rights, we honor the legacy of past movements like the Suffragettes. UNISON stands in solidarity with those bravely challenging injustice and oppression.

As the elected UNISON general secretary, my commitment is to remain connected to the realities faced by workers. I will continue to represent the interests of our union members faithfully and prioritize their well-being above all else.

In light of recent distressing events in Venezuela, it is crucial for political leaders to denounce unlawful actions and distance themselves from lawlessness. Upholding international law and promoting peace should be paramount in shaping our global stance.
