Dubai, a highly sought-after city in the United Arab Emirates, boasts tax-free income, lucrative career prospects, low crime rates, and a modern infrastructure. Its allure is further heightened by its upscale shopping centers, pristine beaches, iconic architecture, and consistent warm climate.
Despite attracting over 15 million tourists annually, Dubai upholds strict laws and customs that both visitors and residents must adhere to. One such regulation, often overlooked, can lead to imprisonment, as revealed by a British expatriate living in the city.
Upon relocating from the UK to Dubai, Janelle Ciara was surprised to discover the stringent rule against using profanity or making offensive gestures, even on social media platforms. In a TikTok video (@janelleciara1), she cautioned, “People have been fined for sharing inappropriate content on various social media channels like WhatsApp and Facebook.”
The Gov.uk website for the UAE warns, “Engaging in swearing or making offensive gestures, including online, is illegal as they are considered indecent acts. Violators may face imprisonment or deportation, particularly when interacting with law enforcement and government authorities.”
Janelle’s video garnered significant attention, highlighting a range of behaviors that could have severe consequences. Among them, public intoxication and alcohol consumption are strictly regulated in Dubai. While drinking alcohol itself is not illegal, consuming it in public spaces is prohibited. Janelle clarified, “Public intoxication or drinking in public areas is not allowed. Alcohol consumption is permitted only in licensed establishments such as bars, restaurants, and hotels. Violators may face fines or incarceration if found intoxicated in public.”
Furthermore, Public Displays of Affection (PDA) are discouraged in Dubai. Janelle emphasized the potential repercussions, citing a case where a British couple was arrested for sharing a kiss in a restaurant, deemed a breach of the country’s decency laws.
In another instance, same-sex relationships are subject to strict penalties in the Emirates. Janelle cautioned, “Deportation or imprisonment could result from engaging in same-sex relationships.”
The Gov.uk website reinforces this, stating, “Same-sex sexual activities are illegal in the UAE, and same-sex marriages are not recognized.”
Embracing modest attire is a prevalent custom in Dubai, strongly recommended for both locals and visitors, especially when in public areas due to the country’s Islamic norms. While there is no official dress code, a modest approach is typically advised, with more relaxed standards observed within hotel premises.
Janelle stressed in her video, “Public nudity is prohibited, and it is advisable to dress modestly in public spaces. When leaving the beach, ensure to cover up appropriately.”
The Gov.uk website adds, “Dress modestly in public zones like shopping malls, as certain venues, events, or buildings may enforce specific dress codes.”
