A popular B&B and café that had won awards has shut down, dealing a heavy blow to the community. The owner attributed the closure to the establishment’s challenging location, which led to a lack of passing trade.
The Dove Inn, known for being a gluten-free café and B&B located in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased operations on Friday after operating for two and a half years. Owner Sonya Resemblance expressed her gratitude for the support received from the community during their time serving what she referred to as “beautiful people.”
This closure is part of a broader trend affecting Britain’s pubs and hospitality industry, where many establishments are forced to close due to increasing costs and evolving consumer habits.
For instance, the beloved White Horse in Beaconsfield recently closed permanently, highlighting the struggles faced by pub owners. The industry has been under pressure due to significant cost hikes, resulting in a concerning number of closures in recent years.
Despite being recognized as one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before shutting down, the Dove Inn faced challenges sustaining its operations. Sonya Resemblance, who took over the inn in July 2023, offered a menu entirely free of gluten, a feature she took pride in, catering to those with dietary restrictions.
In a heartfelt message announcing the closure, Sonya expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community and create job opportunities and social spaces that supported mental well-being. She acknowledged the difficulties faced by the business, especially in its location, and the impact of broader retail and hospitality challenges.
Despite efforts from loyal customers to save the business, Sonya confirmed the closure on January 16, receiving an outpouring of supportive messages. The community expressed sadness over losing a cherished meeting place and the delicious food the inn provided, hoping for a potential return in the future.
