Australian lawmaker Helen Haines is in critical condition following a deliberate car strike outside her office in Wangaratta, as confirmed by police and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday. Haines, aged 65, was airlifted to the hospital after the incident. Albanese stated that it was not an accident but a deliberate act, with the motivation behind it still unknown.
A 43-year-old man was arrested by Victoria Police after the attack on the Independent MP in Wangaratta, situated around 200 kilometers northeast of Melbourne. Police discovered a knife inside the Toyota vehicle used in the attack and took it into custody. Acting superintendent Ashley Mason of Victoria Police assured the public that there was no ongoing threat.
Albanese mentioned that it is too early to establish the motive behind the attack and that a terrorism taskforce would investigate the arrested suspect. Haines’s family, in a statement posted on her Facebook page, expressed gratitude for the quick assistance provided by bystanders, dedicated health workers, and the police.
Haines was elected to represent the electoral division of Indi in Parliament in 2019. Prior to her political career, she worked in rural health care for thirty years as a nurse, midwife, and academic, even completing a doctoral thesis at Uppsala University in Sweden on childbirth. She has been an advocate for causes like climate change, regional housing, and played a role in establishing a National Anti-Corruption Commission with the ruling Labor government.
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor described the incident as a “shocking day” for Australia, emphasizing the need to prevent violent attacks from becoming normalized. Authorities are alarmed by the increasing threats of violence against public figures in Australia, with data showing a doubling of threats against parliamentarians over the past three years. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke highlighted more than 1,000 threats against politicians in the 2025-26 financial year, pointing to the escalating risks faced by individuals in public office.
